Overview

The Pipe Layer is responsible for preparing and laying pipe for storm drains, sanitary sewers, waterlines, and other pipelines. They ensure trenches are properly excavated, shored, and prepared for installation. The role involves grading and leveling trench foundations, aligning and positioning pipes, and checking slopes with levels or lasers to meet specifications. The Pipe Layer also ensures proper bedding and backfilling to prevent pipe deformation and installs pipes that are on grade and airtight as needed. Supporting the Foreman, they monitor progress, and ensure safety and efficiency.

Duties And Responsibilities

• Operate and set up equipment such as lasers, transits, grade rods, and line levels.
• Understand soil types and shoring techniques, following OSHA guidelines for trenching and sloping.
• Read and interpret survey stakes, including cuts, fills, and elevations.
• Lay out pipe routes using blueprints and coordinate with the Foreman.
• Set up pipe lasers in manholes and establish lines.
• Input slopes into laser systems.
• Read grade rods and understand tenths of grades.
• Possess at least 24 months of construction experience.
• Use logic, reasoning, and math effectively.
• Develop efficient methods to resolve roadblocks.
• Adapt to varying soil conditions.
• Install pipes on shallow grades with minimal rework and water.
• Install oversized structures when needed.
• Set the pace for the crew.

Requirements

• Valid driver's license.
• Participation in pre-employment and random drug screening programs.
• Subject to background screening.
