Job description

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Candidates must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. Award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

• United States citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
• Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year of completion.
• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
• Residency training: completion of an accredited core specialty training program that leads to board certification, or one of the following alternates:
  • One year of post‑medical school training (internship, first year of residency, or transitional year residency) followed by two years of independent practice.
  • Non‑U.S. residency training followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States.
• Resident physicians enrolled in an accredited residency program who meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) on an intermittent basis.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Preferred experience: Completion of a Urology Residency and Board Certification in Urology.
• Physical requirements: visual acuity, keen hearing, clear speech, manual dexterity, and ability to perform prolonged sitting, telephone and computer use, walking, standing, stooping, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transfer of equipment/objects may be required.

Responsibilities

• Provide diagnosis and treatment of diseases to adult patients presenting with illnesses and injuries of the genitourinary system that are applicable to your practice, training, experience, or current competence.
• Provide treatment of general medical disease and disorders in an outpatient setting, and provide consultation services in an inpatient setting or emergent need.
• Perform minor and major surgical procedures per credentialing and privileging approvals.
• Complete pre‑operative evaluations and obtain informed consent for patients scheduled for surgery in the ambulatory or main operating rooms.
• Ensure postoperative care and follow‑up is conducted on patients.
• Order routine diagnostic imaging studies and laboratory tests.
• Participate actively in performance improvement and attend assigned meetings or process action teams.
• Work collaboratively with other specialties.
• Follow VA directives and policies, maintain current BLS and ACLS certification.
• Possess computer skills to access and input typed data on each patient into the computerized patient record system (CPRS).
• Maintain license to practice medicine or surgery in a state, territory, commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia, and keep the registration current.
• Outpatient clinics will be held at the West Campus – Montgomery, Alabama, and provide consultation services to the East Campus – Tuskegee, AL.
• Work schedule: 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.
