Summary
The NJ VA Healthcare System is seeking a Physician - Section Chief - Nuclear Medicine and Imaging to join our leadership team at the East Orange - NJ campus. The role primarily involves serving as a Nuclear Radiology Section Chief in the Imaging Service, performing radiopharmaceutical therapies, and interpreting a wide range of nuclear medicine and general diagnostic radiology studies. The position includes pioneering our general nuclear medicine program using SPECT and PET/CT imaging and nuclear cardiology.
Qualifications
Applicants must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Pending training or license completion applicants may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met the initial appointment requirements are deemed to have met the basic standards.
Basic Requirements:
- U.S. Citizenship (non-citizens only if qualified citizens are unavailable)
- Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from an approved school
- Current, unrestricted medical license in the U.S.
- Completed residency training approved by the VA, leading to eligibility for board certification
- Eligibility for appointment as a Physician Resident Provider if enrolled in an accredited residency
- Proficiency in spoken and written English
- Preferred: Board Eligible or Certified in Nuclear Medicine
- Physical requirements per VA standards
Duties
- Provide imaging procedures in the Nuclear Medicine Section
- Administer radioisotopes and supervise the nuclear imaging laboratory
- Interpret and document nuclear medicine and radiology reports
- Ensure high-quality imaging and compliance with accreditation standards
- Advise physicians on clinical indications, limitations, and risks
- Establish and enforce radiation protection standards
- Support staff education and performance improvement
- Monitor handling of radioactive materials and ensure safety procedures
- Keep updated on applicable regulations and standards
- Test and calibrate dosages and survey instruments
- Prescribe radionuclides and dosages for patients
- Manage quality control of radionuclide procedures
- Oversee the safe management and disposal of radioactive substances
- Assist in procurement and staff recruitment
- Orient new employees and support the team
