Job description

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensing requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed VA physicians who met the initial appointment requirements under the previous standard are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements:
  • U.S. Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved medical school.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S.
  • Residency training: Completion of an approved residency program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited programs are eligible for appointment as Physician Residents Providers (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and work under supervision.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Preferred Experience: Certification in Addiction Medicine.
  • Physical Requirements: In accordance with VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
Duties
  • Provide general and addiction-specific psychiatric care within the Mental Health Care Line at VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System.
  • Deliver comprehensive clinical services to Veterans and their families.
  • Participate in the Education Debt Reduction Program and other incentives as applicable.
  • Perform assessments and treatments for addiction and general psychiatric disorders, primarily in outpatient settings, with inpatient coverage as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurse practitioners, and addiction therapists.
  • Utilize Tele-Mental Health services as appropriate.
  • Document patient care accurately in the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS).
  • Adhere to all VA policies regarding infection control, safety, and quality standards.
  • Participate in team meetings and quality management activities.
  • Work schedule: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, Monday - Friday, with consideration for alternate tours.
