Job summary

UNLV Health is seeking a Physician Assistant to provide high-quality patient care in both outpatient and inpatient settings under physician supervision. You will perform clinical duties, order labs, and develop treatment plans while educating patients on their health and medications.

The position requires an MSN, an unrestricted PA license, and state-specific certifications (including Nevada Pharmacy/DEA as applicable).

Qualifications

  • MSN required and PA credential in good standing.
  • Unrestricted PA license and national certification.
  • Certification from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • License eligibility for Nevada Pharmacy and DEA as applicable.
  • BLS or CPR certification required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide patient care in outpatient and inpatient settings.
  • Perform clinical services as assigned and manage cases.
  • Obtain health history and perform physical examinations to guide diagnoses.
  • Order and interpret labs; consult physicians as needed.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans including prescribing medications.
  • Educate patients on medications, health promotion, and prevention.
  • Document medical records accurately and timely.
  • Collaborate with physicians and the clinical team; participate in reviews.
  • Coordinate with subspecialties and refer as appropriate.
  • Triages patient calls and emails; ensure continuity of care.

Job description

The Physician Assistant role within UNLV Health provides primary and specialty healthcare services under the direction of a physician in a clinical setting. Services provided by the PA can include diagnosing patients, ordering laboratory tests, prescribing medication and managing health conditions through evaluation and education. The PA will assist in the OR, as well as with call and inpatient consults. This position requires the ability to work closely with physicians and other clinicians in a team based approach to patient care, and reports directly to the Executive Director of Clinical Operations, with guidance from the Physicians and Clinic Administrator.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide patient care in an outpatient and inpatient setting.
  • Provide clinical services as assigned.
  • Assess patient status by obtaining health history through patient/family interviews and chart reviews; assessing and presenting illness, risk factors, family history, psychosocial situation, and cultural factors; and performing appropriate physical examination.
  • Communicate appropriate case management information to other professionals and community agencies.
  • Order and perform appropriate laboratory diagnostic and other screening tests. Seek other information as needed, including consultation with physicians and other clinicians, for evaluation of illness.
  • Integrate data to determine diagnosis and therapeutic plan, including identification of any health risks.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans by prescribing/dispensing medications and/or injections in compliance with medical practice guidelines and state laws. Handle minor lacerations.
  • Instruct patient/family regarding medications and treatments. Educate patients regarding health promotion and illness prevention. Recommend appropriate community resources to meet patient/family needs.
  • Prepare documentation for medical records including updating patient medical charts by posting examination and test results, diagnosis, medications, and treatment in written/computerized manner.
  • Participate in peer reviews, chart reviews, staff education, clinical guideline development, and other continuing education and quality assurance activities to demonstrate compliance with standards, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Act as consultant/collaborator to the clinical team on area of specialty. Comply with patient confidentiality requirements. Promote patient advocacy.
  • Collaborate with physicians in managing acute and long‑term medical needs of patients. Provide monitoring and continuity of care between visits according to treatment plan including triaging patient calls and emails.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members by making appropriate referrals.
  • May be shared with other sub‑specialty services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • MSN required.
  • Must have a current and unrestricted PA license.
  • Must be certified through a national certifying body.
  • Must hold a Certificate of completion from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Must have or be eligible to have a Nevada Pharmacy and DEA License.
  • Current BLS or CPR Certificate (additional certification may be required based on specialty).
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum five years of professional nursing experience in a clinic setting, plus two years of experience.
  • Minimum three years of supervisory experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of health promotion, health risk identification, and patient education principles and techniques.
  • Knowledge of community, professional, and educational resources.
  • Knowledge of practice management systems including electronic health record systems (EHRs).
  • Ability to competently use Microsoft Office, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and appropriate practice management software.
  • Skill in case management, time management, problem solving, crisis intervention, multitasking, and other organizational matters.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, clinical staff, and the public.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • May include standing, sitting, and/or walking for extended periods.
  • May include performing repetitive tasks.
  • May include working on a special schedule such as evenings and weekends.
  • May include working with challenging patients.
  • May include lifting up to 25 pounds.
