DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan is one of the nation’s largest hospitals specializing in rehabilitation medicine and research. RIM is known for its clinical expertise in spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke, amputee, orthopedics, and catastrophic injury care. The Institute houses the Center for Spinal Cord Injury Recovery and the Southeastern Michigan Traumatic Brain Injury System (SEMTBIS), one of only 16 federally designated model systems of care for brain injury care and research. RIM also operates 31 outpatient sites throughout southeast Michigan specializing in sports medicine and orthopedics.
Under the general supervision of the supervisor, Physical Therapy, treats patients using standard physical therapy procedures such as heat, cold, electricity, traction, ultrasound, and exercise. Evaluates patients' motor and neurological capabilities and documents findings.
Responsibilities include treating patients with physical therapy techniques, assisting in rehabilitative exercise programs, instructing patients on the use of rehabilitative equipment (braces, splints, ambulation aids), and administering tests to evaluate motor and neurological functions.
Documents all patient treatments, evaluations, progress notes, and discharge summaries in accordance with departmental policies. Co-signs notes written by assistants, aides, and students. Develops home care programs and provides family instruction during hospitalization and after discharge.
Participates in interdisciplinary meetings, reports on patient progress, and consults with team members. Oversees and evaluates physical therapy assistants, aides, students, and volunteers as assigned.
Maintains equipment and supplies, recommends purchases, and stays current on treatment techniques through professional development. Serves as a member of a designated service line and promotes interdisciplinary care programs.
