Job summary

Thorlabs is seeking an experienced photonics tool engineer to design, build, and test tools for scientific and industrial applications in Newton, NJ. You will coordinate across engineering disciplines to qualify technologies and support manufacturing transfer.

The role emphasizes troubleshooting complex optical/electronic systems, data analysis, and close collaboration with software and production teams. A MS/PhD or BS+8+ years is expected, with strong laser and optics knowledge.

Qualifications

Master's or PhD in Physics, Optics/Photonics, Electrical Engineering or related field with post-degree experience
Experience can substitute for MS degree (BS + 8+ years)
Data analysis and control of laboratory equipment is required
Experience with lasers, optics, and related scientific software is a plus

Responsibilities

Designing, building, and testing photonics tools for scientific and industrial applications.
Designing experiments to qualify proof-of-concept technologies.
Supporting product development in system engineering, coordinating between engineering disciplines.
Manage project timeline and costs.
Specify and perform testing to characterize catalog or system products.
Create specifications for components and test procedures.
Collaborate with software group to maximize functionality.
Provide technical support to Manufacturing, Marketing and Service.
Assist and troubleshoot production as needed.
Enter data in Thorlabs ERP system.
