Job summary

WVU Medicine is seeking a phlebotomist to join its clinical labs team in Bridgeport, WV. The role focuses on blood and blood culture collection, along with non-blood samples such as urine, sputum, semen, and throat swabs, while ensuring proper chain of custody.

The successful candidate will perform venipunctures and skin punctures promptly and with patient care in mind, labeling specimens at collection and using basic lab equipment. Additional clerical duties and drug screens may be required.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Phlebotomy Certification (CPT).

Responsibilities

• Draws blood efficiently for all ages with minimal patient discomfort.
• Properly labels specimens in the presence of the patient.
• Operates basic lab equipment (centrifuges, printers, scanners, etc.).
• Communicates effectively with patients, clients, and staff.
• Performs clerical duties such as filing, report distribution, processing.
• If applicable, collect drug screens using Chain of Custody processes.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

• Consistently draws blood competently and expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible for patient groups from neonates to geriatrics.
• Properly labels all specimens in the presence of the patient.
• Operate basic laboratory equipment (e.g., centrifuges, computer systems, labeling printers, scanners, phone system, etc.).
• Communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, clients, and staff.
• Perform clerical duties such as filing, report distribution, processing, and faxing.
• If applicable, collect drug screens (internal and external) using Chain of Custody Process.

Physical Requirements

• Heavy/Hard work: Work requires strength and/or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying of materials and equipment weighing 40+lbs.
• Ability to bend, stoop, reach and be capable of normal rotation, standing and walking for entire shift.

Working Environment

• May require unsupervised access to restricted areas that may contain medications, supplies and patient confidential information.
• May be required to travel between facilities/buildings.
• May be scheduled to work various shifts based on departmental needs.

Skills and Abilities

• Ability to use a computer keyboard, monitor, mouse, and calculator.
• Ability to use computer software (PowerPoint, Word, and Excel).
• Ability to use Fax machines, printers and other office equipment.
