Job summary

WVU Medicine Princeton Community Hospital is seeking a Phlebotomist to collect blood and non-blood specimens across patient groups from neonates to geriatrics. You will label specimens, operate basic lab equipment, and support clerical tasks.

Requirements include a high school diploma; CPT certification preferred; at least six months of phlebotomy experience. Strong communication with patients and staff and potential travel between facilities may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Consistently draws blood and non-blood specimens with minimal patient discomfort.
  • Properly labels all specimens in the presence of the patient.
  • Operate basic laboratory equipment (centrifuges, labeling printers, scanners, etc.).
  • Communicate effectively with patients, clients, and staff.
  • Perform clerical duties such as filing, report distribution, processing, and faxing.
  • Collect drug screens using Chain of Custody Process, if applicable.

Job description

Responsible for blood and blood culture collection; non-blood specimen collection including urine, sputum, semen samples, throat swabs; chain of custody specimen collection. Perform venipunctures and skin punctures competently and expediently.

Minimum Qualifications
Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:
  • Phlebotomy Certification (CPT).
Experience
  • Six (6) months of phlebotomy experience.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
  • Consistently draws blood competently and expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible for patient groups from neonates to geriatrics.
  • Properly labels all specimens in the presence of the patient.
  • Operate basic laboratory equipment (e.g., centrifuges, computer systems, labeling printers, scanners, phone system, etc.).
  • Communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, clients, and staff.
  • Perform clerical duties such as filing, report distribution, processing, and faxing.
  • If applicable, collect drug screens (internal and external) using Chain of Custody Process.
Physical Requirements
  • Heavy/Hard work: Work requires strength and/or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying of materials and equipment weighing 40+lbs.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, reach and be capable of normal rotation, standing and walking for entire shift.
Working Environment
  • May require unsupervised access to restricted areas that may contain medications, supplies and patient confidential information.
  • May be required to travel between facilities/buildings.
  • May be scheduled to work various shifts based on departmental needs.
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to use a computer keyboard, monitor, mouse, and calculator.
  • Ability to use computer software (PowerPoint, Word, and Excel).
  • Ability to use Fax machines, printers and other office equipment.
