Job summary

Wheeling Hospital is seeking a phlebotomist to perform blood and non-blood sample collections with attention to patient comfort and chain of custody where required.

The role requires a high school diploma (or equivalent) and six months of phlebotomy experience; CPT certification is preferred. Expect 40 hours weekly with potential travel between facilities and shifts as needed.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Collect blood and blood culture specimens; collect non-blood specimens (urine, sputum, semen, throat swabs).
• Perform venipunctures and skin punctures competently and efficiently.
• Label specimens properly in patient presence.
• Operate basic lab equipment (centrifuges, computers, labeling printers, scanners, phone system).
• Communicate effectively with patients, clients, and staff.
• Perform clerical duties: filing, report distribution, processing, faxing.
• Collect drug screens using Chain of Custody Process if applicable.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

Responsible for blood and blood culture collection; non-blood specimen collection including urine, sputum, semen samples, throat swabs; chain of custody specimen collection. Perform venipunctures and skin punctures competently and expediently.

• Consistently draws blood competently and expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible for patient groups from neonates to geriatrics.
• Properly labels all specimens in the presence of the patient.
• Operate basic laboratory equipment (e.g., centrifuges, computer systems, labeling printers, scanners, phone system, etc.).
• Communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, clients, and staff.
• Perform clerical duties such as filing, report distribution, processing, and faxing.
• If applicable, collect drug screens (internal and external) using Chain of Custody Process.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Certification, and/or Licensure

• High School Diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications

• Phlebotomy Certification (CPT).

Experience

• Six (6) months of phlebotomy experience.

Physical Requirements

• Heavy/Hard work: Work requires strength and/or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying of materials and equipment weighing 40+lbs.
• Ability to bend, stoop, reach and be capable of normal rotation, standing and walking for entire shift.

Working Environment

• May require unsupervised access to restricted areas that may contain medications, supplies and patient confidential information.
• May be required to travel between facilities/buildings.
• May be scheduled to work various shifts based on departmental needs.

Skills And Abilities

• Ability to use a computer keyboard, monitor, mouse, and calculator.
• Ability to use computer software (PowerPoint, Word, and Excel).
• Ability to use Fax machines, printers and other office equipment.
