Job summary

Keck Hospital of USC, part of the University of Southern California, seeks a Laboratory Assistant to procure blood samples, preserve specimen integrity, and handle processing and transport of specimens. Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Graduate from an accredited Phlebotomy program.
• 1 year experience in phlebotomy (preferably in an acute care facility).
• Computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience in phlebotomy preferred.

Responsibilities

• Obtains blood sample specimens by venipuncture or capillary methods in response to testing requests by clinicians, considering patient age.
• Receives and screens specimens for acceptability per guidelines.
• Delivers blood products to Surgery and surgical specimens to appropriate sections of the Laboratory.
• Processes, distributes or packages all specimens received (except Anatomic Pathology samples).
• Answers inquiries for lab results, specimen status and general information about the Department and its functions.
• Communicates with patients, staff, and guests professionally and empathetically, considering age.
• Adheres to hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
• Performs additional clinical and clerical duties as needed to support the Department.
• Participates in the Department's Quality Improvement program.
