Job summary

Riverview Health is seeking a Phlebotomy Technician to join our laboratory team. You will greet patients, collect blood samples, and perform pre-analytic processing for in-house testing or referral laboratories.

Off-site facilities and driving responsibilities are included, with a rotating weekend/holiday schedule. Responsibilities include specimen collection, data entry, results communication, and ensuring proper handling of specimens.

Qualifications

• Minimum: High School Diploma.
• Preferred: Phlebotomy Certificate and/or Associates degree in one of the chemical, physical or biological sciences and at least one year full-time laboratory training or experience or both.
• Minimum: Experience with data entry, medical terminology and customer service or equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable job knowledge can be acquired.
• Preferred: 1-2 years previous laboratory/phlebotomy experience.
• Minimum: BLS certification through the American Heart Association within 30 days of date of hire.

Responsibilities

• Supports the hospital’s mission through customer-focused service.
• Responds to inquiries from customers regarding laboratory services including specimen requirements, turnaround times, reference ranges and reporting protocols.
• Collects STAT, timed and routine venous and capillary blood specimens from off-site facilities and hospital inpatients and outpatients in accordance with laboratory SOPs.
• Instructs patients in the proper collection and handling of non-blood specimens.
• Generates and reviews collection lists and pending logs from the Laboratory Information Systems (LIS).
• Must use personal vehicle or Riverview provided vehicle for transporting specimens; must provide proof of insurance and valid driver's license.
• Stocks phlebotomy supplies on inpatient units and fills orders for off-site facilities.
• Performs specimen processing steps: receiving, data entry into LIS, identifying, centrifuging, and preparing for testing; communicates with staff to ensure turnaround time.
• Reviews orders for completeness and enters test orders in LIS.
• Performs basic compliance checks and notifies coordinators if needed.
