Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws, label specimens, and centrifuge samples according to procedures.
• Explain venipuncture and specimen collection procedures to patients clearly.
• Demonstrate technique using straight or butterfly needles.
• Follow physicians' orders and match requisitions to tubes.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
• Package specimens for transport and store at required temperatures.

Overview

A healthcare services provider is seeking a Spanish speaking Phlebotomist to support patient specimen collection across the Chicago area. This is a contract position with a projected duration of 3 months and strong potential to convert to a permanent role, ideal for someone experienced in fast-paced clinical or lab environments who can travel locally to serve patients.

What you'll do

• Perform blood draws, label specimens, and centrifuge samples according to established procedures
• Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures (e.g., urine or fecal) to patients
• Demonstrate technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles
• Fully understand and follow physicians' orders
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order
• Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy
• Package specimens for transport and store samples at required temperatures, following protocols to maintain specimen integrity
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations
• Attend annual department trainings
• Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries
• Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures, and update patient information

Required qualifications

• Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment (as required in some states)
• Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting
• Minimum of 1 year of experience
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
