Job summary

Job Duties

Phlebotomists are responsible for the collection and procurement of blood and human specimens in the clinical setting. This role is an important component of patient experience, and the individual is expected to collaborate with clinical counterparts to provide a safe environment that promotes the best possible outcomes.

  • Performs venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens according to the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.
  • Demonstrates expertise in patient identification, specimen collection, labeling, accessioning, and processing.
  • Exhibits strong problem‑solving skills.
  • Understands the criteria for specimen acceptability and rejection.
  • Functions effectively in a team environment.
  • Works under the leadership of Phlebotomist III, Preanalytical Specialist, Team Lead, Supervisor, or other laboratory leader and escalates issues accordingly.
  • Possesses critical‑thinking skills to adjust to changing work conditions.
  • Carries out responsibilities in an independent and accountable manner in all assigned care areas.
  • Functions as an autonomous end user of relevant Geisinger business applications and tools.
  • Performs collection of specimens in the acute, post‑acute, clinic, and field service areas as needed.
  • Mentors students and new employees.
  • Expected to conduct themselves in alignment with Geisinger core values and competencies.
  • Manages inventory as required and directed by site or regional lead.
  • Requires initial and annual competency via the Learning Management System which includes an exam and direct observation checklist.
  • Fosters a collaborative approach to delivering patient care, with effective communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrating individual and team accountability, and practicing sound judgment and decision making.
  • Assists with continuous‑improvement objectives including root‑cause analyses and other investigative processes.

Position Details

As a phlebotomist, you support Geisinger’s mission of providing exceptional patient care through innovative, efficient, and high‑quality laboratory services. At Geisinger, our phlebotomists are the friendly faces that collect samples for analysis by our state‑of‑the‑art labs. You will be responsible for venipunctures/skin punctures on patients in our inpatient setting and will also handle troubleshooting physician orders and processing specimens for testing.

Qualifications

Phlebotomist I, II, and III qualifications will be considered at appropriate compensation; salary commensurate with experience.

  • Experience as a nursing assistant (NA), certified nursing assistant (CNA), medical assistant (MA), certified medical assistant (CMA), or similar will be considered.
  • Military experience will be considered (US Army 68W Combat Medic, 18D, US Navy Hospital Corpsman, and related medical specialties).
  • Phlebotomist I – less than 1 year of experience.
  • Phlebotomist II – 1–2 years of experience or a graduate of Geisinger’s School of Phlebotomy Program.
  • Phlebotomist III – qualifications of Phlebotomist II plus ASCP certification and internal preceptor course.
Location & Schedule

Geisinger Shamokin Area Community Hospital (GSACH)

Part time

Rotating shifts: 9 p‑5 30 a rotating shifts possible.
