Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Preferred: certification from a medical assistant program, military medical or laboratory assistant program
• Minimum two (2) years clinical or hospital experience
• Knowledge of venipunture and skin puncture procedures
• Ability to professionally and courteously interact with patients, visitors, co-workers and external laboratory customers
• Knowledge of basic computer data entry
• Ability to prioritize tasks and organize workload
• Knowledge of laboratory techniques in specimen handling and processing
• Must be able to handle stressful situations in a professional manner
• Must be detail oriented.

Responsibilities

• Reports directly to the laboratory Support Supervisor assigned to the phlebotomy section.
• Perform venipuncture, heel puncture and finger puncture according to established procedures.
• Able to instruct patients correctly for collection of non blood specimens (urines, 24 hour urines, occult blood etc)
• Accession specimens into the computer system.
• Process specimens in the centrifugation area for distribution to the testing area or for proper storage.
• Maintains standard precautions at all times.
• Transports specimens to the laboratory as needed.
• Provides excellent customer service.
• May be required to work from various locations (Pavilion, North Campus, or Emerson) or float between various lab departments, as needed based on department needs and within scope of practice.
