Phlebotomist - Medical Laboratory Assistant (Full-Time)

Overview

Family Practice Associates was founded by Dr. Jeffrey Foxx in 1983 and has grown to become one of the largest family practice groups in Central Kentucky. Our team of primary care providers is dedicated to delivering family-centered care from birth through later years. We have over 20 primary providers, including physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and a marriage and family therapist. Our professionally trained staff includes CMAs, receptionists, lab techs, and others. We are recognized as a Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) by the National Commission on Quality Assurance. We strive to provide enhanced access to medical care at our Hamburg & Brannon Crossing locations and online at www.fpalex.com.

Responsibilities

The Point of Care Medical Laboratory Assistant performs phlebotomy and point of care testing as part of daily laboratory operations, as assigned by the laboratory manager. Responsibilities include:

  • Collecting viable and appropriate specimens from patients.
  • Maintaining documentation for specimen collection and tracking.
  • Sending specimens to reference laboratories for tests not performed in-house.

Inventory

  • Maintaining adequate inventory of laboratory supplies.
  • Ensuring supplies are viable before use.
  • Rotating stock so the oldest materials are used first.

Safety

  • Following safety procedures outlined in the manual.
  • Proper disposal of medical waste.
  • Maintaining a safe and clean environment in waiting rooms, restrooms, phlebotomy areas, and laboratories.

Point of Care Tests

The assistant performs authorized point of care tests requiring appropriate skills. Responsibilities include:

  • Following procedures for specimen handling, testing, and reporting.
  • Maintaining records of patient test results and proficiency testing.
  • Adhering to quality control policies and documenting activities.
  • Performing calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting as needed.
  • Identifying and correcting test performance issues or notifying supervisors.

Other Tasks

  • Performing additional tasks as assigned by the laboratory manager.

Minimum Requirements

  • Phlebotomy skills and experience.
  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures.
  • Fine motor skills for operating equipment and computers.
  • Experience with electronic health records preferred.
  • Ability to stand most of the day, stretch, and lift less than 10 pounds.
  • Good communication, problem-solving, judgment, and initiative.
  • Ability to prioritize and develop workflow.
  • Willingness to perform other assigned tasks.

Work schedule: Monday-Friday, 40 hours/week, with occasional Saturdays and evenings as needed.
