Job description

The function of this position is to perform basic phlebotomy and laboratory assistant duties. A variety of tasks include blood collection from patients of all ages, collection of body fluid specimens (e.g., urine), cultures, and other departmental functions under the supervision of a medical technologist.

Education

High School graduate or equivalent required.

Qualifications

ASCP Phlebotomy Certification or equivalent preferred.

Experience

Phlebotomy experience preferred.

Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Manual dexterity is essential.
  • Ability to accurately follow directions and perform specific functions.
  • Effective communication with hospitalized patients, outpatients, hospital, and lab staff.
  • Knowledge of proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Moderate physical effort; may be exposed to infectious diseases.
Responsibilities
  • Identify and obtain blood specimens from inpatients/outpatients of all ages, employees, etc., using correct techniques and equipment. Verify accuracy of orders and resolve discrepancies prior to drawing blood. Ensure specimen integrity by following collection protocols. Record collection details accurately.
  • Assist with retrieving blood, managing computer system entries, and stocking supplies.
  • Monitor daily phlebotomy activities using various computer programs and logs.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and stocked phlebotomy area and carts.
