Job Summary
Under the direction of phlebotomy management, performs diverse support functions including phlebotomy to ensure accurate test results and a quick turnaround time. Positions supporting Patient Service Centers and client offices are required to provide phlebotomy services at these locations as determined by department needs and may be assigned to different locations and/or different schedules without a 30-day notice.

Essential Functions
- Performs venipuncture and capillary punctures to obtain adequate samples. Responsible for correct patient identification, specimen labeling, and documentation. Demonstrates knowledge and ability to evaluate and select proper collection methods for age-specific patients.
- Supports activities related to laboratory testing (phlebotomy, specimen collection, computer order entry, and specimen processing) to ensure accurate result reporting and quick turn-around time.
- Performs processing functions related to testing including verification, accessioning, aliquoting, processing and batching send-out testing, adding/canceling tests, distributing, storing, and disposing of specimens.
- Performs registration duties applicable to the site/location of assignment. Computer-based registration and order entry duties require prior training provided by the applicable department.
- Adheres to compliance policies related to job duties, including presenting the Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) of non-coverage prior to outpatient services.
- Performs observational competency evaluations of support staff under the guidance of phlebotomy leadership using established criteria.
- Oversees and schedules training of new employees, provides in-service education on new policies and procedures, and may act as a shift leader. Works well without direct supervision.
- Maintains department equipment and inventory to ensure proper supplies are available.
- Participates in quality improvement/process improvements, data collection, QC documentation, and CAP surveys as applicable. Supports patient and family-centered care and high reliability organization activities. Assists in training new hires and attends staff and committee meetings as assigned.
- Uses resources efficiently, completing tasks accurately and timely, and being mindful of laboratory funds and supplies.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Medical Assistant or Phlebotomy Course and externship required
- Completion of a phlebotomy training program required; 50 successful draws in previous roles may substitute for formal training
- Minimum 1 year of relevant experience as a Phlebotomist required
- Driver's License for Michigan outpatient and nursing home positions upon hire
- CRT-Phlebotomy Technician or CRT-Medical Assistant preferred upon hire
Physical Demands
- Seldom to frequent lifting and carrying of weights from 5 lbs up to 50 lbs, with specific positions and frequencies outlined
- Frequent walking, standing, and bending; occasional stair climbing; seldom crawling/kneeling, reaching, handling, and forceful grip or pinch
- Finger/hand dexterity required frequently
