Job description

Summary: The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.

Position Responsibilities

1. Experience doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, decontamination, updating patient information, etc.
2. Collects and stores specimens according to established procedures.
3. Properly explains in a clear but courteous manner the process of venipuncture (blood drawing) and other specimen collection methods (e.g., urine or fecal).
4. Demonstrate technique(s) using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
5. Fully understand all physicians' orders.
6. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
7. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
8. Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
9. Package specimens for transport.
10. Store specimen samples according to required temperature, use appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately label, and follow specific protocols to maintain specimen integrity during transport.
11. Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
12. Attend annual department training sessions.
13. Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, if required.
2. Minimum of 6 months' experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
3. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
4. High School Diploma or GED.
5. 2-4 years of relevant experience.
