Job summary

Qualifications

• Demonstrates knowledge and experience in phlebotomy or related laboratory function.
• Basic computer skills including experience using computer software applications.
• Keyboarding and typing skills.

Responsibilities

• Verifies positive patient identification to ensure patient safety and assesses reactions to specimen procurement.
• Performs venipuncture and collects specimens from newborn, pediatric, and adult patients.
• Ensures specimens are properly labeled and suitable for testing; resolves ID/requisition problems.
• Performs limited testing under CLIA, 1988 guidelines per policy.
• Answers and screens telephone calls; assists with inventory and billing/business functions.
• Accepts, receives, sorts, packages, and tracks specimens for transport; processes for testing including aliquoting and pre-analytical steps.
• Orders and verifies test requests; documents information for QA; runs quality control checks; notifies providers of abnormal results.
• Performs laboratory result entry in the computer system.
• Participates in proficiency testing and generates/distributes reports.
• Instructs employees and students in phlebotomy, data entry and specimen processing functions.
• Provides care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
