Schedule spans 8 hours between 6:30am and 6:30pm, Monday–Friday, with comprehensive phlebotomy duties across varied patient populations. Responsibilities include blood draws, specimen labeling and processing, patient communication, and strict adherence to physicians' orders and lab protocols.

Qualifications

  • Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment.
  • Minimum 5 years of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience overall.
  • Experience with pediatric patients.
  • Experience with geriatric patients.
  • Experience with oncology patients.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High School Diploma or GED.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, and record maintenance data and decontamination activities.
  • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
  • Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients.
  • Demonstrate proper technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
  • Follow physicians' orders.
  • Match requisition forms to tubes; label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
  • Check test requisitions or labels against scripts to ensure accuracy.
  • Package specimens for transport and maintain proper temperature.
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Attend annual department trainings.
  • Answer calls and communicate laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Overview

A healthcare services organization is seeking a skilled Phlebotomist for a contract role based in Greenbelt, MD, with potential for permanent placement. This position is critical to ensuring accurate specimen collection and patient care across a range of patient populations, including pediatric, geriatric, and oncology patients. The initial engagement is projected for 3 months, with strong potential to convert to a permanent position.

What you'll do
  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, and record maintenance data and decontamination activities
  • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures
  • Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures (e.g., urine or fecal) to patients
  • Demonstrate proper technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles
  • Fully understand and follow physicians' orders
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes; label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order
  • Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy
  • Package specimens for transport, maintaining proper temperature and container requirements to preserve specimen integrity
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations
  • Attend annual department trainings
  • Answer telephone calls and communicate laboratory results to satisfy inquiries
Required qualifications
