Job Summary and Qualifications

This full-time role supports microbiologists: setting up cultures, conducting rapid tests under supervision, pulling blood cultures at incubation end, and performing quality control. The role includes distributing microbiology reports and assisting with phlebotomy: collecting blood from neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and seniors in hospital or outside settings. Knowledge of laboratory information systems is required.

Key Responsibilities:

• Prepare specimens on culture media and incubate.
• Perform rapid tests such as RSV, Strep A, Flu A&B, C. difficile toxins, Chlamydia, occult blood, rotavirus, and urine antigen tests; perform quality control.
• Review blood cultures for accuracy, process negatives, and prepare positives for gram stain and culture.
• Prepare samples for reference labs, including ordering, storing, and transporting.
• Document and distribute microbiology reports.
• Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on diverse patient groups as needed.
• Manage specimen tube system, maintain refrigerators, and dispose of old specimens.
• Inventory supplies and perform chain of custody drug screens.
• Assist in training new employees and troubleshoot specimen collection and processing issues.
• Operate laboratory computer systems and monitor pending lists.
• Label samples accurately using two patient identifiers.

Qualifications:

• High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
• At least one month of blood collection experience.
