This position is responsible for accurately performing phlebotomy and specimen collection for inpatients and outpatients. Samples collected are used for laboratory tests essential in patient diagnosis and treatment. The Phlebotomist may also perform computer, courier, and clerical tasks vital to laboratory operations. The role works under the supervision of Medical Technologists.

Responsibilities:

1. Interact courteously and professionally with all laboratory customers; respond to inquiries promptly.
2. Follow proper patient identification procedures; procure blood specimens via venipuncture, heelstick, and fingerstick; instruct patients on collection procedures; and collect other types of samples as needed.
3. Demonstrate dependability, reliability, and independent judgment in prioritizing tasks.
4. Transport specimens from collection sites to the laboratory following safety protocols.
5. Adhere to laboratory and hospital policies regarding procedures, quality control, safety, and personnel policies.
6. Perform clerical duties, including entering demographic data, test orders, and managing test charges and credits using computer systems.
7. Train and orient new employees, students, and residents as assigned.
8. Report any unusual or problematic incidents to technical staff or supervisors.
9. Perform arterial punctures following strict guidelines, if required.
10. Monitor and maintain supplies, using materials cost-effectively.
11. Meet minimum qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent; certification from an accredited Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant program preferred; minimum 6 months phlebotomy experience preferred; knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory information systems preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

• Phlebotomy Technician (PBT(ASCP)) or equivalent certification preferred.
• CPR/BLS required within 30 days of hire/transfer.
• Additional clearances: Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting, Act 33, Act 34, Act 73 FBI Clearance.
