Job summary

North Alabama Medical Center seeks a dedicated phlebotomist to perform venipuncture and specimen collection, ensuring accuracy in chain-of-custody processes and coordinating with nursing for therapeutic drug monitoring. You will support order entry and clerical workflows, answer lab phones, and assist with inventory management.

Responsibilities include specimen labeling, processing, and routing to appropriate departments, with emphasis on patient safety and specimen integrity.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma preferred.
  • Phlebotomy certification preferred.
  • BCLS certification may be required by facility policy.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English.

Responsibilities

  • Review providers’ orders, quick-register patients when needed, and place appropriate lab orders per the provider’s requisition.
  • Verify patient identity using two patient identifiers prior to collection.
  • Obtain blood specimens via venipuncture, finger stick, or heel stick; collect urine, throat, and nasal specimens as ordered.
  • Label specimens with two identifiers, date/time, and collector initials; ensure specimen integrity and proper handling.
  • Perform chain-of-custody urine drug screen collections and breath alcohol testing per policy.
  • Coordinate therapeutic drug-monitoring collections with nursing to align dose and draw time.
  • Resolve unusual or unclear test orders by contacting the ordering provider, pathologist, nursing station, or reference lab; elevate unresolved items to the supervisor.
  • Process and route specimens to the correct internal lab departments or reference laboratories according to policy.
  • Maintain par levels of collection supplies; complete weekly departmental inventories.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities and required education; perform other duties as assigned.

Position Summary

Performs venipuncture and specimen collection/processing; completes chain‑of‑custody collections and breath alcohol testing as required; supports order entry and related clerical workflows; answers laboratory phones and provides customer service; assists with inventory of phlebotomy supplies. Reports to the Director or Manager of Department.

  • Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure: Occupational exposure may be present for all employees.
  • Physical Requirements (typical): Frequent standing, walking, sitting, reaching, keyboard entry, repetitive hand/arm movements; occasional kneeling, squatting, pushing/pulling up to 25 lbs, lifting up to 25 lbs; rare climbing/running greater weight pushes/pulls or lifts.
  • Environmental Exposures: Frequent contact with blood/bodily fluids; occasional exposure to biohazardous waste, communicable diseases/pathogens, dust, gases/vapors/fumes, hazardous chemicals/medications; latex exposure occasional.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Education: High school diploma preferred.
  • License/Certification: Phlebotomy certification preferred.
  • Certifications: BCLS required (if applicable by facility policy).
  • Skills: Critical thinking, decisive judgment, ability to work with minimal supervision under stress; rapid learning and use of multiple software systems; effective English communication (read/write/speak); ability to complete the Skills Competency Checklist within 90 days of hire.
