POSITION: PHLEBOTOMIST

DEPARTMENT: LAB

FLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPT

SCHEDULE: THIS POSITION IS EVERY OTHER WEEKEND, SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, 5:00AM - 5:30PM OR 4:30AM - 5:00PM

JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for collecting blood and other specimens from patients for medical testing, ensuring accuracy and patient safety. This role involves working directly with patients, preparing specimens for laboratory analysis, maintaining records, and adhering to all regulatory and safety standards.

JOB RELATIONSHIPS: Responsible to the Laboratory Director

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Perform venipunctures and capillary punctures to collect blood samples from patients of all ages
  2. Collect other types of specimens as required (e.g. urine, stool, swabs)
  3. Collects specimens and blood samples from contracted Nursing Home facilities, as required.
  4. Label and prepare specimens for transport and analysis
  5. Verify patient identity accurately and ensure proper documentation and test requisitions
  6. Follow established procedures for patient care and specimen collection
  7. Document collection times and dates, test requisitions, specimen details, and initial to maintain an accurate daily count of collections performed
  8. Verify test requisitions by comparing information with nursing station log; bringing discrepancies to the attention of unit personnel
  9. Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying supervisor of unresolved orders.
  10. Maintain cleanliness and sterility of equipment and workspace
  11. Provide excellent customer service to patients and healthcare team members
  12. Adhere to infection control protocols and personal protective equipment (PPE) guidelines
  13. Monitor inventory of phlebotomy supplies and request restocking when needed
  14. Ensure proper stocking of supplies for phlebotomy trays and phlebotomy area
  15. Assist with training of new phlebotomy staff or students, if required
  16. All other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Training: High school diploma or equivalent is required. Completion of a certified phlebotomy training program is preferred. Certification (e.g. NHA, ASCP, CPT) preferred.

Work Experience: One (1) year of experience is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time
  • Frequent movement throughout the laboratory and various hospital departments and patient care areas
  • Requires fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination to perform a phlebotomy
  • Frequently position self to maintain equipment, obtain supplies, access materials or instruments, etc.
  • Constantly operates a computer, office and Lab machinery
  • Ability to effectively communicate information accurately so others will understand
  • Ability to hear and respond to alarms, instruments alerts, and verbal communication in a noisy laboratory environment
  • Ability to observe details at close range
  • Ability to move materials, equipment, etc. weighing up to 25 pounds
