Qualifications

• Working towards a PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Robotics, Applied Mathematics / Statistics / Physics (with ML and sensor-data experience).
• Research experience in time-series ML, Human Activity Recognition, wearable sensing, or multi-modal sensor fusion.
• Strong Python programming skills and hands-on experience with PyTorch or TensorFlow.
• Available to work a 12-week internship from May/early June to August in the summer of 2027; in-person at Mason Business Center.

Responsibilities

• Review the state of the art in full-body motion reconstruction from wearable sensors to inform modeling and sensor design choices.
• Determine optimal sensor configurations – type, number, and placement – for motion reconstruction tasks.
• Design, build, and refine deep learning models that convert IMU and EMG signals into accurate full-body motion.
• Evaluate models on public and internal datasets and analyze assumptions, failure modes, and limitations.
• Deliver a production-ready application that lets internal researchers upload recordings, run inference, and visualize results.
