Qualifications

• Working towards a PhD in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, or related field.
• Ability to work safely and independently with prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms.
• Excellent microbiology and synthetic biology skills (sterile technique, microbial cultivation, familiarity with common molecular biology tools).
• Basic laboratory quantitative and digital skills for assay design and analyses of results.
• Available to work a 12-week internship from May/early June to August in the summer of 2027, working daily in the office at Mason Business and Innovation Center.

Responsibilities

• Mine literature for genetic pathways and biosensors for chemical classes of interest.
• Leverage genetic engineering tools and analytical techniques to enable, improve, and quantify biomolecule production and/or biosensor function.
• Independently develop, execute, and analyze experiments to characterize and optimize engineered microbial systems.
• Stretch goals include automation of experiments to deliver outputs more quickly and reliably.
