Job summary

X is Alphabet’s moonshot factory located in Mountain View, CA. We are seeking a PhD resident in AI for science to join our Bio Design Kitchen team for about six months to a year, working onsite five days a week.

You will develop ML-driven workflows for lab automation, test models for instrument control, and collaborate across multiple disciplines to push rapid, high-impact research. The role emphasizes hands-on wet-lab experience, software development, and experience with automated liquid

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a PhD program in AI, ML, chemistry, biology, mechanical engineering, or related field.
• Experience with Python.
• Experience with robotics systems (manipulators, liquid handlers) or similar.
• Experience building workflows as part of a team.
• Knowledge of biology/chemistry laboratory practice.

Responsibilities

• Develop and test models to control and orchestrate laboratory instruments and robotics.
• Develop and maintain a shared Python codebase for automating laboratory tasks.
• Apply LLMs and agents to laboratory operations.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams and work onsite five days a week.
