Job summary

Job description

The Pharmacy Department at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute places emphasis on the values of reliability, professionalism, cooperation, teamwork, communication, positivity and inclusiveness. The Pharmacy Technician I, OPD (Outpatient) is responsible for providing support to pharmacy operations under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. The Pharmacy Technician I, OPD (Outpatient) will staff in pharmacy locations/areas as required.

This is a per diem position with a 100% on-site requirement locatedat the Merrimack Valley regional campus (5 Branch St Methuen, MA).

Pharmacy Technician Duties:

  1. Practices as a pharmacy technician in accordance with all federal, state, DFCI and Joint Commission policies, regulations and standards.
  2. Fills medication orders according to policy, while gaining proficiency with advanced prescriptions.
  3. Ensures timely delivery and/or completion of medication orders and/or supplies.
  4. Utilizes multiple systems such as EHR (Electronic Health Record, Inventory Management Systems and other systems to complete and document duties. Troubleshoot as necessary.
  5. Maintains the Pharmacy inventory: sorting, stocking, rotation of stock and expiration date checking.
  6. Performs and documents quality control steps as required (e.g., barcode scanning, etc.).
  7. Performs cleaning of sterile and non-sterile areas of the pharmacy as assigned.
  8. Trains other employees as assigned.
  9. Communicates and escalates issues or problems.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.

Outpatient Technician Duties:

  1. Responds to and manages questions from patients and triaging calls from providers.
  2. Manages assigned claims-related adjudication issues with occasional need for assistance.

Minimum Education:
High School graduate or equivalent.

Minimum Experience:
Prior workexperienceas a pharmacy techniciannot required.

License/Certification/Registration:
Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy Registration as a Pharmacy Technician or Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy Registration as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee required. National Pharmacy Technician Certification (PTCB) must be obtained within 2 years of hire date; or Massachusetts Pharmacy Intern License.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Ability to accurately perform pharmaceutical calculations.
  • Ability to utilize pharmacy technology systems.
  • Ability to develop proficiency and mastery of compounding of non-sterile products.
  • Ability to independently troubleshoot issues and assist in resolution or escalation to the appropriate resource.
  • Ability to treat all others (fellow pharmacy staff, patients, nurses, providers, support personnel, etc.) with the utmost professionalism and respect.
  • Ability to effectively work within a collaborative team-focused environment.
  • Participate in department meetings and functions to promote a successful and efficient pharmacy workgroup.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills (ability to analyze information objectively and make a reasoned judgment).
  • Strong attention to detail.
