Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• State licensure as Pharmacy Technician per state requirements (MD/OH/PA/WV).
• National Certification (PTCB or NHA) or must obtain within 15 months if 2+ years in pharmacy.
• Associates degree or post-high school science education or pharmacy technician training program.
• National Certification required on hire.

Responsibilities

• Read physicians' orders, prepare medications, deliver medications, and order/deliver drug supplies for patient-care units.
• Read orders and prepare medications for dispensing, including unique dosage forms for all patient populations.
• Understand standard pharmaceutical/medical terms, abbreviations and symbols used in prescribing/dispensing medications.
• Replenish medications and deliver contents to patient care areas according to schedule.
• Accurately prepare and deliver controlled substances and maintain records.
• Take inventory and replace outdated or depleted medications.
• Label products appropriately.
• Perform arithmetic calculations for dosage determinations.
• Perform initial checks for prescribed doses based on weight and age.
• Comply with departmental standards for speed and accuracy.
• Prepare/label prepackaged medications and maintain related records.
• Maintain inventory in assigned pharmacy areas.
• Answer telephone and direct calls appropriately.
• Keep pharmacy storage areas clean and orderly.
• Assist in training pharmacy technicians.
• Some duties require pharmacist license per state/federal regulations.
• Assist with sterile IV room preparation and maintenance.
• Prepare IV admixtures using aseptic technique for various patients.
• Enter IV admixture and injectable product information into Pharmacy IV computer systems.
• Manage controlled substances for the health-system.

Education

High school diploma or Equivalent

State licensure as Pharmacy Technician (MD: Technician Permit or License; OH: Trainee or License; PA: Trainee or License; WV: Trainee or License)

Nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician (PTCB or NHA) or must obtain within 15 months with 2+ years pharmacy experience

Associates degree or post-high school science education or graduate of a pharmacy technician training program
