Job summary

Northwestern Medicine's Pharmacy Technician III-Central Operations is a full-time rotating shift role based in the Feinberg 9th floor pharmacy. Under a registered pharmacist, you will perform technical duties in the daily operation of dispensing areas, including unit dose, sterile products, IV admixtures, and related manufacturing procedures.

The position requires a High School Diploma and CPhT (PTCB) or ExCPT (NHA) certification (post-2008).

Qualifications

• High School Diploma is required.
• CPhT certification through PTCB or ExCPT through NHA is required for all licenses issued after 2008.
• Newly licensed technicians have 2 years from license date to obtain certification.
• Preferred: completion of a Technician Training Program and previous pharmacy technician experience.

Responsibilities

• Prepares medication orders for inpatients.
• Prepares prescriptions for outpatients.
• Picks up orders and delivers medications to nursing units.
• Schedules intravenous admixture solutions according to the patient’s medical record.
• Reports any variance from the record to a pharmacist.
• Answers the telephone according to hospital policy and screens calls for pharmacist or technician handling.
• Enters new drug orders and renewal/refill information into the computerized patient medication profile.
• Uses the computer system to assist in all dispensing and inquiry functions.
• Compares patient medication bin with pharmacy and nursing records and returns outdated meds.
• Receives, prepares, and distributes floor stock requisitions and requisitions for other locations.
• Compounds dosage forms for dispensing to patients.
• Maintains adequate inventory levels in dispensing areas.
• Packages extemporaneous and STAT single doses under supervision.
• Prepares sterile products and cytotoxic agents for administration.
• Plans daily tasks to provide department services under pharmacist direction.
• Delivers narcotics and performs narcotic inventories as directed.
• Ensures compliance with hazardous waste procedures.
