Job summary

Mille Lacs Health System is seeking a Pharmacy Technician to support the pharmacy department and assist pharmacists in dispensing prescriptions and providing patient care.

Responsibilities include processing new prescriptions, answering refill requests, entering orders into software, and assisting with inventory and billing. Some duties require interaction with providers and patients, under supervision.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Must be registered with the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy prior to start date.
  • On-the-job training or prior experience may be considered as an alternative.
  • Computer experience is required.
  • Must pass criminal background check.
  • Preferred: registration as a pharmacy technician with Minnesota Board of Pharmacy or related program.

Responsibilities

  • Accept new prescriptions or refills; supervision by a pharmacist.
  • Answer refill calls and process orders.
  • Assist with obtaining refill authorization from providers.
  • Enter prescriptions into pharmacy software.
  • Prepare and label prescriptions; maintain accurate records.
  • Work with pharmacists to ensure accurate dispensing and verification.
  • Support billing and patient communication as directed.

Job description

Summary

This position works in the pharmacy department under the direction of a registered pharmacist, providing services to patients serviced in all departments.

Job Duties

The essential functions of this job are identified with an asterisk (*) at the end of the bullet point.

The job responsibilities contained in this section must be supervised by a Licensed Pharmacist:

  • Accept new written prescriptions or refill orders.*
  • Take refill request information from patient over the telephone, and process orders.*
  • Contact providers for refill authorization.*
  • Take oral, fax, and written authorization from provides for prescription refills.*
  • Enter new/refill prescription order into the pharmacy software system.*
  • Pick manufactured drug from shelf and fill/label prescription orders.*
  • Count or pour the manufactured product into a suitable dispensing package and apply label to dispensing package with technician's initials placed on the label.*
  • Present the completed prescription, original Rx order, and original stock bottle to the pharmacist for final verification/certification.*
  • Assist licensed pharmacists in preparation/dispensing of prescriptions.*
  • Assist licensed pharmacist in order to work effectively with the medical providers, and patients.*
  • Work with the Pharmacist to prioritize daily technician duties/tasks.*
  • Take inventory of drug stock, and prepare orders for vendors.*
  • Manage inventory electronically using pharmacy software.*
  • Check stock for outdated materials monthly.
  • Inspect orders received from vendors, certify for correctness, and restock inventory.*
  • File prescription orders to maintain legal recordkeeping processes
  • Work with pharmacy software/hardware systems to ensure reliable prescription dispensing.*
  • Complete and file daily reports (i.e. workload reports, controlled substance reports).*
  • Assist pharmacy billing staff as needed in the processing and back-billing of pharmacy claims.
  • Communicate with patients as instructed by licensed pharmacist.*
  • Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement activities as requested.
  • Must attend all mandatory department trainings.
  • Assist pharmacist with clinical services, including but not limited to the administration of vaccines if appropriate training is acquired.

Required Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED Required.
  • Must be registered prior to start date with the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy.
  • Previous On-the-Job training or experience may be considered in place of formal education.

  • Must pass criminal background check.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Registered pharmacy technician with the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy, LPN Program, or equivalent Experience working in a hospital setting.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This position's regular workdays are Monday through Sunday. Occasional evening work may be required as job duties demand.
