Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • California Licensed Pharmacy Technician
  • 2 years of outpatient pharmacy experience, working as a Pharmacy Technician.
  • Recent experience working in an Outpatient Pharmacy setting (within last 2 years).
  • Knowledge of third-party insurances, Medicare Plan-B, and/or manual claims.
  • Knowledge of current Medi-Cal Formulary and other third- party billing systems.
  • Knowledge of current California Pharmacy Law.
  • Working knowledge of pharmacy terminology, generic/brand name drugs and abbreviations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with UCDMC Outpatient Pharmacy.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform sterile and non-sterile compounding.
  • Ability to operate Pharmacy Information System and other computer programs.
  • Working knowledge of UCDMC Outpatient Pharmacy.

Department Overview

The UC Davis acute care hospital has 646 beds and an ambulatory care service area spanning north to the Oregon border, east to Nevada, and down the Central Valley to Fresno, California, covering 65,000 square miles across 33 counties.

The Department of Pharmacy is a dynamic, integral, and critical part of patient care provided by UC Davis Health. As a department of greater than 600 professional, technical, and administrative support personnel, we focus on providing patient-centered medication management that optimizes outcomes through practice, education, research, and leadership through the continuum of care. We also have the largest pharmacy residency program in the country with 46 total residents in 13 different programs.

The Department of Pharmacy offers comprehensive pharmaceutical services (unit dose, IV admixtures, clinical services, infusion pumps, and teaching) throughout the health system complex 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The pharmacy services encompass inpatient pharmacy services as well as an expansive footprint in the ambulatory care space where we have clinical pharmacists embedded within our clinics and specialty care locations. Our operational teams support the health system enterprise with three inpatient pharmacies, five outpatient pharmacies, two infusion pharmacies, a home infusion service line, and the full complement of pharmacy purchasing, stores, and distribution.

Department Specific Job Scope

Job scope includes receiving, distributing, managing, and storing pharmaceutical products and supplies; complying with all pharmacy laws and ethics; handling of medications in accordance with pharmacy department policies and procedures; keeping accurate electronic records of all medications dispensed; handling insurance claims and resolving any problems as they arise; managing logistics for filling and distributing orders or prescriptions; completing medication repackaging or compounding prior to patient administration; perform pharmaceutical calculations; may be required to operate advanced, innovative technology to assist in preparation and dispensing of medications; ensuring accurate bill and cost transfer between cost centers; performing all quality control checks prior to final pharmacist verification including accurate manipulation, volumes, labeling, and storage requirements; preparing and packaging chemotherapy medications and other medications requiring special handling in accordance with safety measures; providing customer service by answering phone calls in a prompt and courteous manner; triaging requests and prioritizing them; responsible for medication inventory management and reporting of any discrepancies; collecting and maintaining an accurate medication, allergy, social and insurance history; ensuring accuracy of patient’s medication list including follow-up with clinics, external pharmacies, or patients to clarify and update; completing audits, including documentation of audit completion and expired medications in designated documentation location; ensuring records are accurate, complete, within specification to ensure compliance with FDA, DEA, or other applicable rules and regulations; serving as a liaison to physicians and nurses to support the medication use system; may facilitate prior authorization process, includes date entry of PAs, routing to pharmacists for decisions, creating notifications and facilitating any additional communication with requesting physician’s office; documenting patient interactions within the medical record; and working with Pharmacy Manager to ensure that policies and procedures are current, and all activities are following relevant standards.

Work Environment

  • UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014.
