Job summary

DMC Children's Hospital of Michigan is seeking a Pharmacy Technician Supervisor to lead the technician team and oversee daily operations in a fast-paced hospital environment.

You will work closely with pharmacy leadership, pharmacists, and clinical staff to ensure safe, efficient, patient-centered services and continuous improvement in workflow and performance.

Qualifications

Job Description/Summary
Position Summary

The Pharmacy Technician Supervisor provides frontline leadership and operational oversight for the pharmacy technician team. This position is intended for an experienced pharmacy technician who has demonstrated strong leadership skills and is ready to take ownership of technician operations, staff development, workflow, accountability, and team engagement.

The Pharmacy Technician Supervisor works closely with pharmacy leadership, pharmacists, clinical staff, nursing, and other hospital departments to ensure safe, efficient, and patient-centered pharmacy services.

We are looking for a leader who is highly visible, approachable, accountable, and committed to developing a strong pharmacy technician team. The successful candidate should be comfortable leading people, addressing challenges, improving processes, and creating an environment where employees feel supported while maintaining high expectations for performance.

Essential Responsibilities
Leadership and Staff Development
  • Provide direct day-to-day leadership and supervision of pharmacy technicians.
  • Serve as a visible and accessible leader within the department.
  • Build positive relationships with technicians and promote teamwork, professionalism, respect, and accountability.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop pharmacy technicians at all levels of experience.
  • Identify high-performing employees and create opportunities for professional growth and advancement.
  • Participate in interviewing, hiring, onboarding, orientation, and training of new pharmacy technicians.
  • Provide ongoing feedback and participate in employee performance evaluations.
  • Address performance, attendance, behavioral, and workflow concerns promptly and consistently.
  • Recognize employees for strong performance and contributions to the department.
  • Help create a culture where employees feel comfortable communicating concerns, asking questions, and bringing forward ideas for improvement.
Pharmacy Operations
  • Provide oversight of daily pharmacy technician operations and ensure appropriate staffing and workflow coverage.
  • Coordinate technician assignments based on patient care needs, workload, employee competencies, and department priorities.
  • Monitor workflow throughout the day and adjust assignments when necessary.
  • Assist with technician scheduling, PTO management, call-offs, shift coverage, and staffing needs.
  • Maintain competency in technician responsibilities and provide operational support when necessary.
  • Ensure medications are prepared, delivered, stocked, and managed accurately and efficiently within the technician's scope of practice.
  • Support medication distribution systems, automated dispensing cabinets, inventory management, controlled substance processes, sterile compounding operations, and other technician functions as applicable.
  • Identify workflow inefficiencies and partner with pharmacy leadership to develop sustainable solutions.
  • Promote standardization and consistency across pharmacy technician operations.
Quality and Patient Safety
  • Promote a culture in which patient safety is the highest priority.
  • Ensure technicians consistently follow departmental policies, procedures, regulatory requirements, and established standards of practice.
  • Identify potential medication safety risks and elevate concerns appropriately.
  • Participate in medication safety initiatives, process improvement projects, audits, inspections, and regulatory readiness activities.
  • Assist with investigation and follow-up of medication distribution errors, near misses, and workflow concerns.
  • Reinforce expectations related to accurate medication preparation, storage, handling, documentation, and delivery.
Communication and Collaboration
  • Maintain open, timely, and professional communication with pharmacy leadership and staff.
  • Communicate operational changes and departmental expectations clearly to the technician team.
  • Conduct or participate in technician huddles and staff meetings.
  • Encourage employees to bring forward concerns and improvement opportunities.
  • Work collaboratively with pharmacists, nursing, physicians, and other health care professionals to resolve operational issues affecting patient care.
  • Help strengthen communication between shifts, work areas, and pharmacy locations.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Active Pharmacy Technician license or registration as required by the State of Michigan.
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification preferred or required based on organizational standards.
  • Minimum of 3 years of pharmacy technician experience preferred.
  • Previous demonstrated leadership experience required. Leadership experience may include serving as a supervisor, lead technician, coordinator, trainer, preceptor, shift leader, or other position involving responsibility for leading and developing employees.
  • Hospital pharmacy experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees, pharmacists, nurses, providers, and leadership.
  • Experience with scheduling, training, employee development, workflow management, or performance management preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous supervisory or formal leadership experience in a hospital or health system.
  • Experience leading pharmacy technicians in a complex acute-care environment.
  • Experience with sterile compounding and USP and USP requirements.
  • Experience with automated dispensing cabinets, medication inventory systems, and pharmacy technology.
  • Experience developing or implementing technician training and competency programs.
  • Experience participating in quality improvement or operational improvement initiatives.
