Job description

GS-13 Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisor

The primary responsibility is providing supervision, professional and administrative leadership and guidance to the Inpatient Section of Pharmacy Service at the VA Central Iowa Health Care System (VHACIHS). The position reports to the Associate Chief - Operations, Pharmacy Service.

Functions: (In addition to the duties and responsibilities listed below, the incumbent must also be able to perform all staff pharmacist duties.)

  1. Responsible for administrative/supervisory functions, including direct supervision of Inpatient Clinical Pharmacists and the CLC pharmacist, and indirect supervision of pharmacy technicians and interns.
  2. Manage day-to-day operations of the Inpatient Pharmacy.
  3. Develop, revise, and implement policies and procedures.
  4. Oversee performance improvement activities, audits, and accuracy screening.
  5. Maintain effective relations with medical, professional, and administrative staff.
  6. Provide professional guidance to medical and professional staff.
  7. Enforce VHACIHS and Pharmacy service policies.
  8. Complete performance evaluations and recommend awards or disciplinary actions.
  9. Oversee maintenance and operation of pharmacy equipment and automation.
  10. Collaborate with pharmacy leadership to promote patient care within budget.
  11. Assign work and manage staff schedules.
  12. Maintain accurate records of time and attendance.
  13. Ensure medications and services meet accreditation standards and legal requirements.
  14. Prepare reports and correspondence accurately and timely.
  15. Participate in interdisciplinary committees and serve on quality assurance investigations.
Program Management

Responsibilities include planning, directing, and coordinating pharmacy services, optimizing workflows, integrating performance improvement activities, and working with procurement and cost management teams.

Clinical Functions

Includes verifying orders, screening for issues, providing drug therapy consultations, resolving problems, monitoring patients, and participating in PI activities.

Work Schedule

Full-time; Monday-Friday, 0730-1600

Other Details

Ad-hoc telework; not virtual; no relocation incentives; no PCS authorized.

Qualifications

All requirements must be met by 05/28/2025. Includes U.S. citizenship, pharmacy degree from an accredited institution, licensure, and English proficiency.

Experience: 1 year at the GS-12 level, demonstrating knowledge of pharmacy practice, communication skills, regulatory compliance, and ability to assess drug therapy outcomes.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Supervisory ability, persuasive communication, regulatory expertise, program management.

Preferred: 1+ year supervisory experience in hospital pharmacy, 3+ years clinical practice.
