At UConn Health, this position is responsible for the coordination of training and teaching activities, the supervision of the non-dispensing aspects of the Pharmacy Service, as well as providing pharmacy services to patients. This pharmacist will work in the Pharmacy at UConn Health John Dempsey Hospital located in Farmington, CT.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the limited supervision of an employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May lead/supervise lower-level employees, students and others as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
  • Supervises, develops, coordinates, and implements clinical learning experiences of introductory and advanced practice pharmacy students; supervises the non-dispensing aspects of the pharmacy service.
  • Supports activities of drug information; disseminates pertinent drug information and its applicability in practice to staff.
  • Evaluates new reference resources; answers the most complex drug information inquiries from staff and other health professionals; provides clinical leadership and direction to assess and determine appropriate pharmacy services related changes required to ensure optimal delivery care model.
  • Reviews literature and prepares monographs on drugs proposed for formulary additions.
  • Identifies and maintains policies and procedures surrounding formulary and clinical activities; works to evaluate, assess, and determine clinical program responses and ad hoc operational logistics.
  • Manages clinical alternatives to mitigate drug shortages; serves as active participant on pertinent committee meetings.
  • Manage the alignment of patients with medication assistance programs for those patients who cannot afford their treatment at John Dempsey Hospital
  • Manage the logistics of medication access for patients who cannot have their medications provided by the hospital
  • Coordinates pharmacy department seminars/continuing education courses and on-going training; develops and plans drug utilization evaluation program.
  • Acts as preceptor for pharmacy residents.
  • Provides pharmacy services as needed
  • Performs related duties as required
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of specialty pharmacotherapy, pharmacokinetics, pathophysiology, and medical diagnosis
  • Considerable knowledge of the operation of a hospital pharmacy or outpatient ambulatory practice clinic
  • Considerable knowledge of relevant Federal and State Laws
  • Considerable interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Teaching and preceptor ability
  • Ability to proficiently utilize technical automated equipment and information systems to collect, maintain and analyze data
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
GENERAL EXPERIENCE
  • Pharm D, master's, or bachelor's degree in pharmacy from an accredited Pharmacy program
  • Five (5) years clinical hospital experience
  • One (1) year American Society of Health-systems Pharmacists [ASHP] accredited resident program may substitute for two [2] years of the required experience; additional PGY residency experience will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis
  • Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain a license as a Registered Pharmacist in the State of Connecticut.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of or experience working with medication preauthorization.
  • Knowledge of or experience working with medication billing, coding, and claims
  • Experience with charge oversight, revenue accountability, and medication reimbursement
WORKING CONDITIONS

May be exposed to hazardous materials, infectious/communicable diseases, and some disagreeable conditions.

SCHEDULE

Full time, 80 hours every two weeks, primarily 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, other shifts, weekends, holidays, and on-call as assigned, 30-minute unpaid meal break.
