Universal Health Services, Inc. is seeking a Pharmacist Intern to support the Director of Pharmacy in delivering pharmaceutical care in a hospital setting. You will assist with distribution, dispensing, and regulatory compliance under supervision.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in an accredited School of Pharmacy Program.
  • Active Pharmacist Intern License.
  • Experience to oversee medication requirements for diverse patient populations.
  • Knowledge of Joint Commission Standards, OSHA regulations, and state/federal laws.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Director of Pharmacy in pharmaceutical distribution, chemicals and pharmaceutical preparations under supervision, complying with state and federal regulations.
  • Procure medications and dispense to Automatic Dispensing machines and / or cabinets under supervision.
  • Review machine reports and troubleshoot solutions.
  • Communicate with physicians, nurses and staff with appropriate professional judgment.
  • Review patient medication orders and document information in the pharmacy system under pharmacist oversight.
  • Monitor patient profiles for drug interactions and adverse reactions in coordination with the pharmacist.
  • Monitor formulary to optimize treatment and control costs.
  • Fill and label drug containers correctly when dispensing or dispensing from Omnicell under supervision.
  • Dispense narcotics and maintain inventories per State/Federal regulations under supervision.
  • Dispose of hazardous waste under supervision.
  • Ensure distribution, procurement, and clinical services within the pharmacy under supervision.
  • Inspect pharmaceutical supplies and services provided by the pharmacy.
  • Provide counseling and education to patients and families; provide materials and samples as required.
  • Provide LAI medications in-house or via external pharmacy; educate staff as needed.

SUMMARY STATEMENT & PURPOSE

The Pharmacist Intern in coordination with the Director of Pharmacy is responsible for understanding of all legal and accreditation/certification requirements and applicable facility policies, procedures, codes and standards. This includes pharmaceutical and professional functions relating to pharmaceutical care provided at this facility.

All employees are expected to be pleasant, respectful, and courteous in all interactions with patients, families, staff, and visitors of the Hospital, as well as being a positive representative of INBH at all times.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Enrolled in an accredited School of Pharmacy Program.
  • Active Pharmacist Intern License
  • Must possess the experience to oversee the provision of medication requirements for the patient populations treated in this facility, including knowledge of dosage for age-specific populations.
  • A working knowledge of Joint Commission Standards, OSHA regulations, and state and federal laws and regulatory requirements.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • A minimum of one year’s experience in a healthcare setting.

SPECIFIC PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

The job functions of this position are not limited to the duties listed below.

  1. Assist the Director of Pharmacy and/or Pharmacist to perform pharmaceutical distribution, chemicals and pharmaceutical preparations, safely, accurately, and according to state and federal regulations.
  2. Procure medications and dispense medications to the Automatic Dispensing machines and or medication cabinets/carts under supervision/review of pharmacist
  3. Review/audit Automatic Dispensing machine reports and understand process to troubleshoot solutions.
  4. Demonstrate appropriate judgment in communicating with physicians/licensed practitioners, nurses and other facility staff.
  5. Review all patient medication orders and document pertinent information in a timely manner in the pharmacy software program within interventions with oversite of the pharmacist.
  6. Monitor patient profile for drug interaction, adverse drug reactions, and all other aspects of appropriate drug therapy in coordination with the pharmacist.
  7. Effectively monitor the formulary to enhance the effectiveness of treatment, and achieve cost controls.
  8. Appropriately fill and label all drug containers when filled from pharmacy vs dispensed from Omnicell.
  9. Dispense all narcotic drugs when applicable and maintain appropriate inventories and State/Federal regulations under supervision/review of a pharmacist.
  10. Properly dispose of hazardous pharmaceutical waste under supervision/review of pharmacist when applicable
  11. Ensure proper distribution, procurement, and clinical services functions within the pharmacy under supervision/review of pharmacist.
  12. Inspect all pharmaceutical supplies and services provided by the pharmacy.
  13. Provide counseling and consultation concerning medication to patients, families and facility staff, including providing educational materials, outpatient services, and samples as required.
  14. Provide Long Acting Injectable medications in house or through outside pharmacy. Administer and/or educate medication RN LAI when applicable.
  15. Consult (verbally or in writing) when requested or when appropriate under supervision/review of pharmacist and document accordingly.
