UHS in Spokane, WA is seeking a Pharmacist Intern to support the Director of Pharmacy in delivering pharmaceutical care in compliance with Joint Commission, OSHA, and state/federal regulations. You will review medication orders, assist with dispensing, counsel patients, and help maintain medication safety and inventory, under pharmacist supervision.

This internship requires enrollment in an accredited pharmacy program and an active intern license, with at least basic healthcare exposure

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in an accredited School of Pharmacy Program.
  • Active Pharmacist Intern License.
  • Knowledge of dosage for age-specific populations.
  • Working knowledge of Joint Commission Standards, OSHA regulations, and state and federal laws.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Director of Pharmacy to perform pharmaceutical distribution and preparations under supervision.
  • Review medication orders and document in the pharmacy software under pharmacist oversight.
  • Monitor patient drug interactions and adverse reactions with pharmacist coordination.
  • Counsel patients and provide educational materials as required.
  • Dispense narcotics and maintain inventories under supervision.
  • Dispose of hazardous pharmaceutical waste under supervision.
  • Ensure proper distribution, procurement, and clinical services functions under supervision.

Responsibilities

REPORTS TO: Director of Pharmacy

SUMMARY STATEMENT & PURPOSE

The Pharmacist Intern in coordination with the Director of Pharmacy is responsible for understanding of all legal and accreditation/certification requirements and applicable facility policies, procedures, codes and standards. This includes pharmaceutical and professional functions relating to pharmaceutical care provided at this facility.

All employees are expected to be pleasant, respectful, and courteous in all interactions with patients, families, staff, and visitors of the Hospital, as well as being a positive representative of INBH at all times.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Enrolled in an accredited School of Pharmacy Program.
  • Active Pharmacist Intern License
  • Must possess the experience to oversee the provision of medication requirements for the patient populations treated in this facility, including knowledge of dosage for age-specific populations.
  • A working knowledge of Joint Commission Standards, OSHA regulations, and state and federal laws and regulatory requirements.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • A minimum of one year's experience in a healthcare setting.

SPECIFIC PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist the Director of Pharmacy and/or Pharmacist to perform pharmaceutical distribution, chemicals and pharmaceutical preparations, safely, accurately, and according to state and federal regulations.
  • Procure medications and dispense medications to the Automatic Dispensing machines and or medication cabinets/carts under supervision/review of pharmacist
  • Review/audit Automatic Dispensing machine reports and understand process to troubleshoot solutions.
  • Demonstrate appropriate judgment in communicating with physicians/licensed practitioners, nurses and other facility staff.
  • Review all patient medication orders and document pertinent information in a timely manner in the pharmacy software program within interventions with oversite of the pharmacist.
  • Monitor patient profile for drug interaction, adverse drug reactions, and all other aspects of appropriate drug therapy in coordination with the pharmacist.
  • Effectively monitor the formulary to enhance the effectiveness of treatment, and achieve cost controls.
  • Appropriately fill and label all drug containers when filled from pharmacy vs dispensed from Omnicell.
  • Dispense all narcotic drugs when applicable and maintain appropriate inventories and State/Federal regulations under supervision/review of a pharmacist.
  • Properly dispose of hazardous pharmaceutical waste under supervision/review of pharmacist when applicable
  • Ensure proper distribution, procurement, and clinical services functions within the pharmacy under supervision/review of pharmacist.
  • Inspect all pharmaceutical supplies and services provided by the pharmacy.
  • Provide counseling and consultation concerning medication to patients, families and facility staff, including providing educational materials, outpatient services, and samples as required.
  • Provide Long Acting Injectable medications in house or through outside pharmacy. Administer and/or educate medication RN LAI when applicable.
  • Consult (verbally or in writing) when requested or when appropriate under supervision/review of pharmacist and document accordingly.
