Job description

Under direct supervision, the Pharmacy Intern will perform various tasks for the pharmacy department that will prepare them for a pharmacist position in a health-system pharmacy. The Pharmacy Intern will be assigned progressive responsibilities for each subsequent year of internship and will model appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

What you will do
  • Perform unit dose functions, including filling patient drawers on unit dose cart with a 24-hour supply of medications.
  • Fill medication orders for delivery to nursing unit by packaging and labeling doses using computer generated labels for review by pharmacist. Fill floor stock drugs and general requisitions accurately.
  • Answer telephone calls. Provide routine information about medications or handle pharmacy problems. Refer calls to pharmacist or supervisor when necessary. Demonstrate effective customer relations skills, promote a positive work environment.
  • Deliver prescriptions, floor stock, medication carts, IV solutions and emergency drugs to nursing units. Operate tubes system and provide prompt customer service.
  • Assist in inventory control, check inventory to ensure drugs are in date, restock unit dose bins, bulk areas, carts used in emergency rooms, surgery and other patient care areas.
  • Be responsible for bulk packaging and extemporaneous medication preparation.
  • Maintain narcotics accountability sheets and file daily reconciliation sheets. Participate in narcotic and Omnicell drug distribution.
  • Request labels for IV preparation as needed; pull plain and premixed IVs for pharmacist check. Prepare IV solutions, TPNs and parenteral products working under direct pharmacist supervision.
  • Assist in pharmacy-related research projects.
  • Perform additional duties to be performed (in addition to those listed above) based on a planned progression of increased responsibility at each respective internship.
Education/Formal Training Requirements
  • Currently enrolled in a college program Pharmacy.
Work Experience Requirements
  • Preferred – No prior work experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Stated interest in health system pharmacy is desired.
  • Demonstrated competency at each Internship Level must be achieved before progressing to the next level.
Supervision Provided by this Position
  • There are no supervisory functions assigned to this position.
Physical Demands
  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • The physical requirements of this position are: light work – exerting up to 25 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity, such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
  • The conditions to which the Associate will be subject in this position: The Associate is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions; job functions are typically performed under conditions such as those found in general office or administrative work.
