Job summary

US Bureau of Prisons/Federal Prison System in Alabama seeks a licensed Pharmacist to support corrections health programs. The role involves dispensing medications, reviewing usage, and coordinating medication programs within a secure environment to ensure safe, humane treatment and public safety.

Applicants must hold a ACPE-recognized PharmD (or equivalent) and be licensed in the United States, with at least one year of professional pharmacy experience.

Qualifications

• Pharmacy degree and active license in the United States.
• Minimum one year of professional pharmacy experience.
• Ability to dispense medications and advise on proper usage and side effects.
• Knowledge of medication programs, handling procedures and records.
• Competence in researching medical literature to provide accurate responses.

Responsibilities

• Dispense medications prescribed by physicians and inform health practitioners and patients about proper usage and side effects.
• Evaluate medication use patterns and outcomes for patients in hospitals or managed care organizations.
• Plan, monitor and evaluate medication programs or regimens.
• Establish medication-handling procedures for storage and preservation of medications.
• Research medical literature/clinical information to provide accurate responses.
• Maintain all medication records required by law.
• Coordinate integrated pharmacy programs with other departments.
• Ensure proper packaging and labeling of medications.
• Dispense pharmaceuticals in accordance with proper procedures.
• Supervise and direct Staff Pharmacists and/or Pharmacy Technicians.

Education

Doctoral degree in Pharmacy (ACPE or equivalent)

3 years grad education toward Ph.D./ Pharm.D. or equivalent

Basic Requirements

Education

• A doctoral degree in Pharmacy that is recognized by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

OR

• 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree, Ph.D., Pharm.D. OR equivalent doctoral degree.

Licensure

Applicants also must be licensed to practice pharmacy in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Medical Requirement

In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements above, applicants must have a minimum of one year of professional pharmacy experience.

Education

There is no substitution of education for specialized experience for this position.

Experience

Applicant's qualifications background must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies necessary to perform the work of the position. Pharmacy work requires knowledge of the use, clinical effects, and composition of medications, including their chemical, biological, and physical properties. Qualifying professional pharmacy experience may involve, but is not limited to:

• Dispensing medications prescribed by physicians and other health practitioners and providing information to health practitioners and patients about proper usage of medications and side effects;
• Evaluating medication use patterns and outcomes for patients in hospitals or managed care organizations;
• Performing administrative, consultative, or staff advisory work for a medical facility's pharmacy program;
• Planning, monitoring and evaluating medication programs or regimens;
• Establishing medication-handling procedures for the storage and preservation of medications;
• Researching medical literature and/or clinical medication information to provide accurate responses to inquiries; and/or
• Maintaining all medication records required by law.
• Experience in planning and providing a completely integrated pharmacy program and coordinating these programs with all other departments within the institution.
• Experience in determining that all medications are properly packaged and labeled.
• Experience in dispensing pharmaceuticals in accordance with proper procedures.
• Experience in supervising and directing subordinate staff consisting of Staff Pharmacists and/or Pharmacy Technician's (which may include civil service and/or Public Health Service staff).
