Overview
The Personal Trainer creates safe and effective exercise programs aimed at reducing injury and helping clients achieve fitness goals. The role includes one‑on‑one wellness coaching, exercise plans, movement assessment, documentation of exercise programs, and administrative tasks. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and 6–12 months of experience as a personal trainer (required).
- Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science or a related health field preferred, with coursework in first aid/CPR, biomechanics, exercise prescription, and nutrition.
- Current Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) certification (NASM, ACE, ACSM) or Certified Strength and Condition Specialist (CSCS) required (must be in good standing and valid in Michigan).
Responsibilities
- Must have strong knowledge of anatomy and physiology to analyze movements and determine or correct faulty movement patterns.
- Must be able to interpret body composition testing to make recommendations for improvements.
- Creates exercise programs for a wide range of clientele.
- Conducts individual meetings with members regarding exercise, nutrition, stress, and sleep.
- Performs movement assessments and reviews health history as a baseline upon which to prescribe exercise.
- Critiques and evaluates client’s form while providing exercises to improve outcomes and minimize injury risk.
- Handles administrative tasks such as billing, scheduling sessions, reconciling payroll, and responding to emails.
- Follows up with clients via phone or email to check progress and provide feedback.
- Work may require frequent lifting (up to 100 lb) and handling of heavy equipment; above‑average strength and stamina are required.
- Work involves high levels of mental/visual fatigue and close tolerances requiring sustained hand/eye coordination.
