The City of Dayton is seeking a qualified candidate for a clerical position involving various administrative duties. Responsibilities include interviewing applicants, issuing permits, and maintaining records. Responsible for performing various clerical and administrative duties requiring considerable judgment skills. Tasks include interviewing applicants to determine the scope of proposed work, approving and issuing permits for mechanical work, minor construction, alterations, and repairs of structures. Provides permit information and answers questions from designers, applicants, and contractors. Verifies cost estimates, computes permit fees, processes submitted plans, and completes permit applications. Maintains inspection scheduling records, coordinates with inspectors in the field, and prepares reports and schedules for inspectors and the manager.
Graduation from high school (or G.E.D.) AND two years of clerical experience related to engineering or construction technology (engineering, construction, or architectural operation) or code enforcement work. One year of college-level coursework in engineering, construction technology, or any construction-related science may be substituted for one year of experience.
Must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment and maintain it thereafter as a condition of continued employment.
Ability to type 35 words per minute.
Must be a full-time or part-time permanent employee in pay grade 112 (Wage) or below, pay grade 21 (Clerical) or below, or equivalent, and employed for at least 6 consecutive months by the City of Dayton in a classified Civil Service position. Final scores will be broken by (1) seniority and (2) a random selection method.
Final appointment depends on passing a job-related medical examination and providing documentary evidence of employment authorization and identity. Final scores will be broken by a random selection method if necessary.
Examination dates and times are subject to change. Calculators will be provided for the Civil Service examination. Applicants on the Promotional eligible list will be considered for appointment before those on the Open Competitive list. Applicants must provide all necessary employment dates, experience, training, or other requirements as stated in the Exam Announcement for consideration.
A background investigation is required prior to employment, including for current city employees seeking transfer, promotion, or demotion into a classified position. Final appointment is contingent upon passing a drug screen. Applicants offered employment must pass a nicotine screening and remain tobacco and nicotine-free as a condition of employment. The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees.
