Job summary

Qualifications

• Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing.
• One year of pre-op, PACU, and/or medical/surgical nursing experience.
• Current state licensure in good standing.
• BLS/BCLS certification within 90 days of employment.
• ACLS certification within 90 days of employment.
• PALS certification required when pediatric care is included.
• Specialty certification in Perioperative or perianesthesia Nursing is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Promote the mission, vision, and values of SCA.
• Describe the underlying pathophysiology of commonly encountered disease processes.
• Describe the physiology associated with anesthesia techniques and procedures.
• Develop an individualized perioperative plan of care and communicate the patient’s status throughout the perioperative continuum.
• Review patient medical history and surgical plan using PAT anesthesia protocols.
• Interview preoperative patients to gather data for admission.
• Review preoperative test results and notify physicians if abnormal or incomplete.
• Act as initial contact for referral sources to direct screening and clearance of patients.
• Educate patients on medications to take on day of surgery.
• Demonstrate safe operation of equipment and follow safety procedures.
• Provide patient advocate role and protect privacy.
• Administer medications safely using the 8 rights.
• Maintain wound and tissue perfusion integrity.
• Provide nursing and monitoring per policies.
• Prevent infection through proper interventions.
• Manage co-morbid conditions as applicable.
• Assess patient and family knowledge and education needs.
• Involve patient/family in decisions about perioperative care and rehabilitation.
• Protect patient rights, dignity, and privacy.
• Provide age- and culturally-appropriate care within legal standards.
• Comply with Universal Protocol and time-out policy.
• Evaluate patient progress toward outcomes.
• Provide concise hand-off reports to teammates.
• Delegate tasks per state regulations and job descriptions.
• Document care completely and accurately.
• Demonstrate effective communication within the perioperative team.
• Serve on a multidisciplinary planning team.
• Participate in quality review and performance improvement.
