Job summary

Lehigh Valley Health Network seeks a skilled ultrasonography professional to perform high‑risk obstetric exams, document findings, and support physicians with diagnostic imaging. You will maintain patient records, communicate results, and ensure imaging quality across EMR systems.

Ideal candidates hold an Associate degree in sonography, RDMS credentials, and BLS; experience with 3D/4D imaging and a strong patient‑care approach are preferred.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED and formal ultrasound training.
• Associate degree in diagnostic medical sonography or equivalent.
• RDMS certification and ARDMS credentialing required or upon hire.
• BLS certification within designated timeframe.

Responsibilities

• Perform high-risk obstetric ultrasound examinations per AIUM protocols.
• Record anatomical, pathological data for physician interpretation.
• Maintain electronic patient charts and ultrasound reports in EMR.
• Explain studies to patients and provide scope-appropriate care.
• Select transducers and optimize imaging based on fetal position.

Summary

Performs a variety of high-risk obstetric ultrasound examinations and procedures using the established AIUM protocols with experience associated degree of individual judgment based on the clinical circumstances and patient conditions. Performs clinical assessment, diagnostic sonography examinations, and synthesizes information with patient's medical history.

Job Duties

• Records anatomical, pathological and/or physiological data for interpretation by a physician.
• Maintains electronic patient charts and records to processes sonographic data and other pertinent observations made during the sonogram.
• Maintains patient information in the ultrasound documentation/reporting system, image storage system, and EMR. Obtains pertinent medical history from record prior to exams and prepares preliminary reports as requested by the physician.
• Uses independent judgement during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings.
• Selects appropriate transducers and adjusts equipment to optimize the images utilizing the available applications and options on the ultrasound machine, based on fetal position, anatomy, and depth of tissue characteristics.
• Recognizes equipment malfunctions and takes corrective action when possible.
• Explains medical studies and procedures to patients so they are well informed regarding the examination.
• Communicates effectively with patients and their families in patient care setting. Provide scope appropriate supportive patient care during difficult situations. Demonstrate professionalism, flexibility and responsiveness in handling customer interactions.
• Interacts with physicians and colleagues in support of quality, efficiency, safety and patient care.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED and
• Technical School Diploma Ultrasonography or
• Associate's Degree Diagnostic Medical Sonography
• Ability to maintain compliance with regulatory agencies.
• Ability to implement advanced imaging techniques when medically applicable (3D/4D).
• Knowledge of various sonography equipment and related applications.
• Participates in changes to improve efficiency, workflows, and/or patient safety.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support - State of Pennsylvania within 90 Days
• RDMS - Reg Diagnostic Medical Sonographer ARDMS - American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography Upon Hire
• NT - Nuchal Translucency - State of Pennsylvania within 180 Days

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree Healthcare or business discipline

Physical Demands

• Lift and carry 40-50 lbs. Examples: Push/pull patients on bed, stretcher (requires 29 lbs. push force), lateral transfers up to 50 lbs. of the patient's weight. Frequent to continuous standing/walking. Patient transporters can walk 8-10 miles per shift. *Patient care providers may be required to perform activities specific to their role including kneeling, bending, squatting and performing CPR.
