THE NEWARK BOARD OF EDUCATION seeks a Per Diem Security Guard to patrol school grounds and facilities, protect occupants, and deter hazards. Responsibilities include door checks, fire safety inspections, and escorting personnel after hours.

Candidate will assist law enforcement when needed, monitor entry points, and respond to emergencies. This role supports public safety across various facilities in Newark.

Per Diem Security Guard – Office of Safety & Security

Under direction, patrols the grounds, buildings, and other areas of schools, libraries, museums, hospitals, public housing projects, parks, or other public facilities to provide protection to persons from harm, guard public property, and perform related duties as required.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Possession of a valid driver’s license in New Jersey, if vehicle operation is required to perform essential duties.

Basic Function and Responsibilities

• Protect buildings, contents, and occupants from hazards.
• Visually inspect window bars, doors, locks, and other fixtures to ensure they are secure or properly locked and have not been tampered with to prevent theft or unlawful entry.
• Inspect assigned areas for conditions that may contribute to fire (e.g., discarded burning cigarettes) and ensure fire extinguishers are in place and operational.
• Observe odors to detect smoke or gas seepage and other hazards.
• Listen for unusual sounds to detect leaking plumbing, breakage of glass, or tampering of locks or windows.
• Search designated areas for explosive devices using flashlight, taking precautionary measures, and notify bomb disposal unit by calling the local police department.
• Puts out fires using a fire extinguisher.
• Patrol by car or foot along grounds adjacent to public buildings to detect hazards such as fire, theft, vandalism.
• Sit and view a monitor screen or electronic surveillance board, remaining alert to movement indicating unauthorized persons.
• Sit or stand at a post and maintain orderly flow of individuals entering and leaving.
• Examine credentials such as employee passes and press passes at entry points; issue special passes to visitors.
• Identify employees and visitors entering or leaving by recognition of faces.
• Request verbal or written information from individuals regarding their destination, identity, and nature of visit.
• Accompany employees from office building to parking lot or ride in motor vehicle to prevent theft of money or valuables.
• Visually inspect gauges, meters, and instruments to confirm equipment is functional and not tampered with.
• Observe departing individuals carrying unusually large packages or bundles; determine whether searching is warranted.
• Search packages of entrants for firearms or other dangerous objects.
• After normal operating hours, escort employees to their automobile in the parking lot.
• Remove unwilling persons from premises after issuing verbal warnings concerning violations.
• Accompany detainees, such as suspicious or disorderly persons, to a designated holding area.
• Aid law enforcement officers by escorting prisoners and reporting on movements.
• Observe individuals entering and leaving to ensure safe conduct.
• Restrain violent or disorderly persons intent on disturbing proceedings or harming themselves/others.
• Notify other guard personnel of persons of a particular description.
• Give verbal warnings to individuals violating regulations (e.g., disorderly conduct, loitering, smoking).
• Obtain verbal descriptions via telephone or walkie-talkie of individuals who may present a potential danger.
• Tell occupants to evacuate premises; warn about impending danger.
• Give instructions to occupants for prompt evacuation and assembly at a safe area.
• Appear in court as a witness to testify against persons charged with vandalism, theft, or misconduct.
• Provide basic answers to inquiries about location of persons or services or facility layout.
• Judge severity of injury and use walkie-talkie or telephone to contact an emergency vehicle for medical transport.
• Provide emergency first aid.
• Stand at intersections and give hand signals to moving vehicles to ensure smooth traffic flow.
• Aid pedestrians in crossing heavily trafficked intersections.
• Check cars in restricted parking areas for authorization stickers; issue warning or citation.
• Prevent entry or use of a restricted area by certain vehicles through hand signals or explanations of regulations.
• Admit vehicle entry after checking pertinent data (driver ID, vehicle size, etc.).
• Drive government or employee vehicles to clear obstructed traffic.
• Record observations on building conditions and report any unusual occurrence, property damage, or mishap.
• Attend classroom training on bomb detection, first aid, and related topics.
• Attend roll call for announcements of assignments.
• Record location of missing/damaged signs and submit to supervisor.
• Apprehend law violators and inform them of rights.
• Question suspicious persons and may detain and arrest if they violate agency rules.
• Turn key or record visits at watch stations to indicate rounds completed at intervals.
• Report verbally or via walkie-talkie to supervisor or others about security rounds and unusual conditions.
• Seize contraband material or stolen property and detain suspects for questioning.
• Escort unruly persons from premises.
• Occasionally operate an elevator for security purposes to limit access.
• Learn and utilize electronic or manual recording systems used by the agency.
