Job description

Overview

The Respiratory Care Practitioner provides restorative and interventional care to patients requiring respiratory therapy for chronic or acute conditions. They administer various treatment modalities, monitor their effectiveness, and identify when alternative modalities are needed. The Respiratory Therapist is a member of the critical care team, providing resuscitative measures when necessary. They also serve as a resource to patient care providers, given their expertise in pulmonary medicine. Additionally, the therapist performs EKGs, ABGs, and related duties.

Responsibilities
  1. Review all physician orders before administering therapies, ensuring appropriateness, and clarifying with nurses or physicians as needed.
  2. Perform patient assessments before and after therapies according to established policies.
  3. Administer respiratory care modalities, document patient responses, and evaluate therapy effectiveness.
  4. Assess patient responses to therapy, referring unusual or adverse reactions for further intervention.
  5. Suggest modifications to treatment plans based on patient responses.
  6. Participate in patient and family education regarding therapy goals, medication use, breathing techniques, oxygen therapy, and equipment.
  7. Gather and update clinical data each shift, documenting according to departmental policies.
  8. Utilize the clinical information system effectively.
  9. Operate and troubleshoot equipment in various settings per policies.
  10. Respond to emergency situations with appropriate resuscitative techniques and airway management.
  11. Provide respiratory support for patients during transportation, from NICU to adult care.
  12. Support oxygen system functionality and safety.
  13. Participate in CQI initiatives.
  14. Perform EKGs and collect arterial blood specimens.
  15. Cross-trained staff to perform diagnostic testing and complete necessary paperwork.
  16. Assess, manage, and educate patients enrolled in pulmonary rehabilitation programs.
  17. Operate all equipment safely, following manufacturer specifications and safety procedures.
  18. Meet performance expectations in customer service, teamwork, resource utilization, and professional development.
  19. Perform other duties as assigned to ensure departmental operations.
Qualifications

Education: Graduate of an accredited school of respiratory therapy with RRT or CRT credential, with 18 months to obtain RRT.

Experience: Entry-level practitioners may begin without experience but must develop necessary skills during orientation and probation.

Licensure: Current Connecticut license required.

Special Skills: Cross-training in cardiology, pulmonary lab, or pulmonary rehabilitation preferred.
