Job summary

Church World Service, Inc. seeks a Vocational and ESL Instructor to provide English as a Second Language classes for newly arriving refugees and other populations served under CWS programs.

This is a per diem role based on funding, approximately 4 hours per week, with in-person work in New York and potential hybrid arrangements. You will design lessons, teach grammar, reading, speaking, and help students gain job readiness.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in lieu of degree.
• TESOL certification preferred.
• Fluency in English is required with superior written and verbal communication skills.
• Fluency in a primary refugee language is preferred.
• Must be computer literate with MS Office (Excel and Word) and Internet applications.

Responsibilities

• Teaches simple English grammar, writing, reading, speaking, and listening skills to adult populations through tailored lessons.
• Researches and implements curriculum based on attending adults on a track toward employability.
• Implements lesson plans to promote employability and success with interviewing skills; designs teaching aids/activities.
• Provides twelve-week class sessions incorporating approximately 8 hours/week of class.
• Maintains class attendance logs and adapts schedule as necessary.
• Refers clients with accelerated skills to advanced ESL opportunities in the community.
• Tracks daily attendance and submits data to staff.
• Communicates with staff to recommend clients’ entry into the job-search process.
• Maintains confidentiality of class records and personal information.
