Job summary

Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens, Inc. is seeking an ESL Instructor to deliver the ESL classes and monitor the progress of enrollees toward program targets. The role involves intake, assessment, orientation, and curriculum development across multiple sites.

The ideal candidate will have two years of ESL teaching experience, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work evenings and Saturdays. Training in BEST PLUS is a plus as are additional trainings and staff collaboration.

• Maintain Milestone performance files for each enrollee.
• Maintain enrollee attendance and office hours.
• Design and recommend individualized curriculum needs for students.
• Meet with students individually each cycle to review progress.
• Prepare and submit monthly reports on the enrollees and the classes.
• Identify program needs to the Program Coordinator.
• Participate in Conferences, trainings and staff meetings.
• Assist in program development.

Job Description

For over 125 years, Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens has been providing quality social services to the neighborhoods of Brooklyn and Queens, and currently offers 160-plus programs and services for children, youth, adults, seniors, and those struggling with mental illness.

Program provides free English classes for individuals interested in learning the language. Students receive social services and legal referral information about U.S. citizenship and other immigration services. Trainings such as OSHA and First Aid help individuals in creating resumes and cover letters. At times, Mock Job Interviews are provided to individuals allowing them to develop interview strategies as well as to enhance communication skills.

STATEMENT OF THE JOB

The E.S.L Instructor will be responsible to deliver the ESL classes and monitor and assure the progress of enrollees toward achieving the Program Performance targets and milestones.

SPECIFICATIONS FOR EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES

• Bachelors Degree of Arts

SPECIFICATIONS FOR EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

• Two years’ experience teaching ESL to adults in a community based environment.
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Computer literate, including experience with all Microsoft Office software packages, local area, networks, and the Internet.

SPECIFICATIONS FOR PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to work evenings and Saturdays as required.
• Ability to lift and carry supplies and equipment as needed between 5-10 pounds.
• Ability to walk up and down stairs.
• Able to participate and willing to perform physical activities, i.e. Gym.
• Required to talk, hear, see, stand, walk, sit, use hands & arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, & crawl.
• Ability to read printed materials and computer screens.
• Fine hand manipulation (Keyboarding).
• Transportation time spent commuting between sites for meetings and trainings.
• Ability to travel to multiple locations as needed.
