Job summary

The Mental Health Association seeks a Per Diem Peer Support Specialist to join the 988 Mobile Crisis Outreach Team in Hudson County. The role supports adults in nonlife-threatening crises, delivering crisis intervention and non-clinical assistance on an as-needed basis.

Responsibilities include crisis response, motivational interviewing, de-escalation, and follow-up to connect individuals with social services. Weekend and holiday coverage are required to ensure 24/7 access.

Qualifications

• Two years’ continuous recovery experience based on personal experience with a mental illness or substance use disorder, and at least one year of field experience with community individuals.
• Must be certified by at least one credentialing entity: CRSP/CPRS; CRSP by Mental Health Association NJ; NCPRSS; Certified Wellness Coach; Community Mental Health Associate Certificate.
• Ability to provide effective crisis response and de-escalation in community mental health contexts.
• Valid NJ driver’s license with good driving record.
• Ability to collaborate with community providers and 988 managing entity.
• Knowledge of Hudson County resources is helpful.

Responsibilities

• Provide evidence-based crisis services to individuals in the community as identified by the 988 entity.
• Use Motivational Interviewing to engage individuals and offer non-clinical support beyond crisis resolution.
• Assist with de-escalation and, when appropriate, transport to crisis stabilization or hospital emergency departments.
• Follow up with clients to connect them to social services and improve access to treatment.
• Coordinate with family and collateral contacts as needed to access services.
• Provide weekend/holiday coverage for 24/7 access to services on a rotating basis.
• Record keeping, reporting, and documentation per program requirements.
• Attend supervision, agency meetings, and training sessions as assigned.
