This role covers everything that happens after a hire accepts an offer: contracts, onboarding, payroll, pay bands, compliance, events and exits. A strong candidate has about three years in people operations, HR or general operations, knows US labor law and payroll, and works in an organized, hands on way. Because it is a solo seat in a fast moving company, comfort with pace and a low ego matter as much as the technical knowledge.
Much of this work is repeat admin, such as setting up accounts, moving data between systems and calculating variable pay, so AI and workflow tools can take over a lot of it. The role is expected to pick an HR system and connect tools to cut manual steps. What stays human is judgment on legal and tax edge cases, fair pay decisions and sensitive conversations with colleagues.
Fonio builds AI phone assistants, so this person would work in a company that uses AI daily and could try automation on its own people processes. To build that experience beforehand, practice linking HR, payroll and messaging tools with no code automation, and keep a short write up of one workflow that saved real time.
